FtC Hackathon Wrap-Up: Harnessing Capture for Digital Media Trust

Posted in:

Ecosystem

The health and prosperity of the Numbers Protocol ecosystem is predicated on the notion that our Capture provenance solution is useful enough for developers to take the technology and create innovative applications. Recognizing the importance of expanding our community developer network, we agreed to co-host a hackathon with Funding the Commons (FtC) in October 2024 with the goal of putting our blockchain-backed provenance in the hands of talented developers, data scientist and tech enthusiasts and seeing what they can do with it.

The task at hand was simple, take Capture’s cross platform tools and services and create something cool. At the event's conclusion, we can safely say that Capture by Numbers Protocol yielded some awesome solutions. Let’s recap!

Workshop Highlights: The Power of Capture in the Digital Era

Hoping to help developers hit the ground running, we hosted a Capture Solution by Numbers Protocol workshop during the hackathon. The workshop introduced participants to Capture, a comprehensive provenance infrastructure designed to establish trust and ownership for digital assets in an era of rapid technological evolution. Numbers Protocol's Capture offers solutions for labeling AI-generated content, combating misinformation, and upholding intellectual property rights with transparent provenance records.

At the conclusion of the workshop, an exclusive gift code for a free 3 month access to Capture service is provided. If you missed the hackathon and would like to try Capture with the gift code, you could visit this link to sign up for an account and unlock the gift.

Please note that availability is limited, and it's on a first-come, first-served basis.

Implementing Capture in Projects

During the workshop, a significant part was devoted to a comprehensive, step-by-step tutorial on using Capture Cam and Capture Dashboard. This section aimed to equip attendees with practical knowledge and confidence to incorporate Capture into their own projects.

1. Getting Started with Capture Cam:

  • Overview: Capture Cam is a mobile app available for both Android and iOS, allowing users to create blockchain-backed images and videos with a simple click. The app is designed for intuitive use, making it accessible for users of all experience levels.
  • Account Creation: Users must create an account within the app to start using it. The sign-up process requires basic information like email and password. Existing users can log in directly.
  • Capturing Media: Once logged in, users can operate Capture Cam like any standard camera app. They can take photos or record videos, and with the tap of the "Next" button, the app compiles and stores metadata on-chain. This ensures that the provenance record is established at the moment of creation, minimizing risks of alteration.
  • Metadata and Details: Users can view their media in the "Details" section, which displays critical information such as attribution, timestamp, location, NID (unique ID for indexing), hash, and device-related details. This rich metadata captures the full context of content creation, enhancing trust and traceability.
  • Additional Features: Capture Cam also includes features like minting NFTs directly from captured content, which can be accessed via the "Network Actions" menu. Users can choose from actions like gifting or sharing, adding a layer of versatility to their content management.

2. Navigating Capture Dashboard:

  • Overview: Capture Dashboard is a desktop tool that acts as a central hub for media management. It caters to creators who need to generate provenance for media captured outside of Capture Cam, such as with DSLR cameras.
  • Single and Multi-File Uploads: The Dashboard supports both single and multi-file uploads. Single-file uploads allow for detailed customization of metadata fields, while multi-file uploads provide a streamlined, batch-processing option.
  • Customizing Metadata:some text
    • Single-File Upload: Users can review and adjust headline, caption, location, creation time, and licensing details. They can also specify whether the content was AI-generated and adjust permissions for AI training.
    • Multi-File Upload: Users can preview multiple files before registration and make edits as needed. This option speeds up the process when handling large volumes of media.
  • Registration and Verification: Once the uploads are complete, media initially appears in a "Draft" folder. After finalizing the registration, assets move to the "Verified" folder. Users can click on any asset to view detailed provenance records and share them using a unique link generated by the Dashboard.

3. Creating Showcase Pages:

  • Purpose: The Showcase Page feature allows users to present their media collections on a dedicated, customizable page. This is particularly useful for creators who want to share their work with provenance details integrated.
  • Customization and Sharing: Users can personalize their Showcase Pages via the Dashboard and embed them on other websites using an iframe. All Showcase Pages come with Capture Eye automatically integrated, providing an interactive display of provenance information.

4. Integrating Capture Eye:

  • What It Is: Capture Eye is a display widget that can be embedded into websites to show provenance records for media. It provides flexibility for developers who want to share content verification without relying solely on the Dashboard or Showcase Pages.
  • Implementation: Adding Capture Eye to a site is straightforward. Developers need to import the widget, add the necessary tag to their project, and include the NID of the registered media. The widget then displays comprehensive provenance details, enhancing transparency for site visitors.

5. Utilizing the SDK:

  • Developer Integration: For those looking to integrate Capture’s capabilities into custom applications, the SDK provides a robust solution. Accessing the SDK requires a Capture account and an authorization token, which can be obtained through the Dashboard.
  • Use Cases: The SDK allows developers to register, view, and manage media assets programmatically, offering greater flexibility for advanced projects.
