The Power of Openness and Transparency in Building Digital Media Provenance Solutions

Numbers have always been all about Provenance, and it can only be achieved, by trust, transparency, being real, genuine, and open. A world where you can trace the origins of every image, every video, every piece of content that passes through your screen. You know exactly where it came from, who created it, and whether it’s been altered along the way. In this world, the blurred lines between reality and fabrication vanish, leaving only truth in its wake. This isn’t some distant dream, it’s a reality that we are building. And at the heart of this effort are two driving forces: openness and transparency.

Open Source: Building in Public

Openness is a mindset. It's not about merely opening a door; it’s about taking down the walls. At Numbers, we believe that to truly solve the problem of content integrity, you can’t lock your work away. That’s why we’ve embraced open-source technology. There’s a unique power in building something where anyone, anywhere, can take a peek under the hood.

One of our key contributions to this space is Nit—our open-source project dedicated to digital content traceability. Nit provides developers with the tools to build on top of Numbers Protocol’s framework, creating new integrations and solutions that enhance the provenance of digital media. By sharing Nit with the world, we invite developers, researchers, and creators to improve the technology, uncover new use cases, and push the boundaries of what’s possible.

One example of Nit in action is its use by our partners in a significant global effort—the documentation of potential war crimes in Ukraine, using blockchain to secure and verify evidence. This initiative, reported on by major outlets like CNN, highlights the value of Nit’s technology in contributing to real-world, high-stakes projects where content provenance can save lives and ensure justice.

Open source transforms what could be a singular solution into a living, breathing ecosystem. It encourages a global community of contributors, each bringing their own perspectives and expertise to the table. With every addition, Nit evolves—becoming more versatile, resilient, and responsive to the needs of its users. This collective effort ensures that our digital provenance tools don’t just serve Numbers; they serve the world.

Empowering Communities Through Ambassador Programs

But tools alone can’t solve everything. You need people—real people—to carry the message forward, to show others why digital provenance matters. For that purpose, we’re very grateful to the ambassadors that have been supporting us through the Ambassador Program. Our ambassadors aren’t just users, they deeply understand the value of provenance and take it upon themselves to share that knowledge, engaging with communities far and wide to emphasize the importance of content integrity.

What makes ambassadors so vital isn’t just their passion for the project—it’s their role as the eyes and ears of the community. Rather than simply spreading awareness, ambassadors are catalysts for change. Their actions create a ripple effect, sparking meaningful discussions and driving engagement. Through their efforts, the message of transparency reaches the people who need it most—creators, platforms, and users who rely on verified, trustworthy digital content.

As one of our ambassadors recently said:

"In a digital world filled with noise and confusion, it’s crucial to have a way to show the authenticity of what we create. That’s why I’m proud to be part of this movement."

This sentiment encapsulates the passion that drives our ambassadors to ensure provenance technology reaches every corner of the creative space.

Building Trust with Regular Communication

Openness doesn’t stop with code, and it doesn’t stop with ambassadors. It needs a heartbeat—a steady pulse that reminds the community we’re here, we’re working, and we’re listening. That pulse? Our weekly summaries.

Every week, a window opens. Not just into what we’ve built, but into what we’re building right now. It’s about showing progress, yes, but also about showing the journey. What challenges did we face? What solutions did we try? Did we break anything? Did we fix it?

Since we began publishing our weekly summaries, we’ve released close to 150 updates—never pausing, always continuing. This honesty helps us bond. It shows that even in the world of tech, everything is a work in progress. And that’s okay. It’s how we move forward, how we grow. These weekly insights are our way of being transparent, not just about the product, but about the process. And through them, we build trust—not by showing perfection, but by showing our commitment to getting it right.

Openness and transparency aren’t just principles. They are the lifeblood of the future we’re building. A future where content can be trusted because its origins are clear. A future where creators are empowered and consumers are protected. A future where provenance is a given, not a question.
